Malota – the other Mar Hernandez

Some time ago I wrote about the artist Mar Hernandez. I just wanted to clarify – there is another artist called Mar Hernandez out there. She calls herself ‘Malota’ and is pretty established. Check out her homepage here. Her work as grafik designer is so appreciated that she is not only asked to design beer bottle labels (see picture above) but she is also a professsor for grafic design. So, don’t confuse the 2 Mar Hernandezes even though both are pretty damn good artists…. !! Gosh, I really love those beer bottles… what a nice design…

Medieval Hemp Soup Recipes

I don’t know if you aware of it but hemp seeds in food are a pretty modern thing. I know that doesn’t fit the title of this post. But, yes they are! Only recently machinery was developed – the first sometime in the ’90s in Europe – that allows the non-laborious dehulling of hemp seeds. Hemp seeds have a very tough hull – not nice to eat (for a very nice overview of hemp economics and biology look at this recent book). This may be one of the reasons – besides that hemp was primarily for producing cloth, i.e. was harvested when the seeds weren’t ripe yet – that hemp used to be food for the poor. Thus, all traditional hemp recipes out there are really down-to-earth recipes. Don’t get me wrong. They ARE amazing!!! Despite being Medieval, they are even for modern standards pretty healthy… very healthy… Now here is the thing, you hardly find Medieval hemp soup recipes – besides Siemieniotka – on the English web. Thanks God, I speak German as well …

Summer kraut nut avocado salad

It‘s time to mix and match and celebrate plenty. For a laid back Sunday, I decided to prepare this meal-filling salad that basically contains EVERYTHING you need meanwhile having character! What, I mean you will see – just take a look on the ingredient list. Or take a look of the picture I took of the ingredients: For 3 people you need: 1 rather small (but not too small – see pic) pointed cabbage 3 longitudonal flesh tomatos (if questions just take a look at the pic) 200g fresh peas (peel them yourself – see pic) 6 red spring onions 1 avocado 200g walnuts 100g hemp seeds 1 and ½ lemons Hemp oil Olive oil Caraway powder Salt & black pepper Optional: 1 red carrot So, cruel things first: I wanted to use the red carrot as a topping (to add last to the salad). But, I could not since a squirrel ate it. The essence of the story: don‘t store red carrots on your balcony or terrace. First the squirrel marked it with its …

Green asparagus on tortilla look-alike – a quickie recipe that makes you look like a pro cooking wise

This is one of this recipes, you can eat directly from a pan! For it, you will need: 5 mid-sized potatoes 200g green asparagus 5 eggs 7 spring onions olive oil salt an pepper The secret of this recipe is of course green asparagus. I love green asparagus 🙂 It looks great and it always makes YOU look like a gourmet and experienced chef! Plus, taste-wise it is my favourite kind of asparagus. First you need to cook the potatos for 20 minutes in salt water and then peel them (do you remember this easy peeling method). Next, you cut the potato into discs (see picture) and store them in the teflon pan you want to proceed further. Then, cut off the bottom one-third of the green asparagus. Where is the bottom one-third of green asparagus: try out where you an break up the asparagus (it varies in toughness along its length) and break it off where the soft part changes into the hard part. Discard the bottom part or store it for a veggie-soup …

Hemp crackers – there is a new brand in town!

I am addicted! There is a new cracker in town and it is based on hemp 🙂 I love hemp 🙂 Not the cannabis one – the nutrition one (yes, there is a difference). Of course, of course, there are tons of recipes on the web, how you can make them yourself (see for example here or here), but this one is so quickly bought and just so addictive! It only consists of healthy stuff (hemp, sesam, buckwheat, flaxseed) – some of them sprouting), still being yummy, and you can even buy it outside of Germany. It is a great example how vegan, eco-friendly producers are getting better and better in stealing traditional snack producers the show! So, this post is almost product placement so I stop now…

What is Cooking? Mascara!

I guess the perfect make-up is the one that makes a guy just want to eat your face – right 😀 This is an area we are a bit interested in – after all this blog is called LeckerBiss – yummy bite – so if there is a recipe out there how you can smear a strawberry pudding into your face and just look splendid, we would like to know it! As I said – Lecker-BITE (I would run around like that all the time if it ever becomes a thing). Well, kinda you can. As all of you know there are all this make-up bloggers out there who just know how to create make-up at home from things you normally eat. The idea is simple: step into your kitchen and take healthy stuff – BUT now you turn them into make-up! After all this is a life-style, and the blogging scene is the earth it is growing on! The lovely blog Naturelle offers tons of such recipes… In particular for lipstick (a comprehensive list …

Maydie – the wine

A little note of joy. There is a famous wine acclaimed by critics to be best served alongside a dark chocolate desert: Maydie. Maydie comes from a beautiful place in Southern France: the French commune Madiran  in the department Hautes-Pyrénées – always worth a visit. The Château d’Aydie in Madiran which creates Maydie has been family owned for centuries. Some of their plants are more than 200 years old.  Besides Maydie, the family produces an entire buquete of wines made of tannat grapes. In other words, before I become too flat in my description, I really advise you to visit the place yourself and understand. Tannat grapes are believed to give rise to the healthiest red wines (see for example the book “The Red Wine Diet” by Professor Roger Corder and learn how to live longer by drinking red wine). Lots of information, lots of background legend eventhough I would just like to say a very simple thing: This wine really made my evening. It is a great pleasure and it will provide atmosphere to any social gathering just …

Vivace caviar is bancrupt

Some time ago I wrote about Vivace caviar, a company by a former professor of mine that tried to produce caviar in a fish-friendly way. They went bankrupt.  Apparently, the costs of the running production were too high per month, and the sales too low. And, of  course, they earned tons of criticism for their bankruptcy. For example, other sturgeon farmers found the production conditions of vivace faulty – apparently, one could taste that in the resulting caviar eggs (which indeed tasted different). Moreover, harvesting eggs several times from a sturgeon is not a complete novelity – such practices are common already in Russia. Professor Köhler’s patent for hardening the eggs after harvest added only a little bit of extra improvement to the process. Moreover, they were very ambitious – potentially too ambitious – they wanted to start production with 5 tons caviar per year, even though they sold at higher prices than the rest of the market… In any case, the story is a bit more complicated than that of course, so read it …

Camel milk on the rise!

Picture I was looking into the camel-milk-producing industries recently, and I was surprised what I found! Here is a little summary of the best highlights: Camel milk makes up only 0.3% of the total world milk production (cow milk constitutes 83.1%), but they are so many products out there! And, camel milk production is growing – more and more products enter the market. Some are just too exotic to be good. For example, around 2009 the first camel milk chocolate was put on the market (I will not name the brand here, but google it and you will easily find it). Camel milk chocolate is a great idea but at the moment the product lives from its exotic status. Trying it I could taste the difference to cowmilk – and it is a great idea to make chocolate out of camel milk. But, the other ingredients (like the vanilla flavor and the melting potential of the chocolate) were not well orchestred. Even though there is (in my opinion) room for improvement, of course other people …
