Malota – the other Mar Hernandez

Some time ago I wrote about the artist Mar Hernandez. I just wanted to clarify – there is another artist called Mar Hernandez out there. She calls herself ‘Malota’ and is pretty established. Check out her homepage here. Her work as grafik designer is so appreciated that she is not only asked to design beer bottle labels (see picture above) but she is also a professsor for grafic design. So, don’t confuse the 2 Mar Hernandezes even though both are pretty damn good artists…. !! Gosh, I really love those beer bottles… what a nice design…

Wine that is blue as blue jeans

… is so blue cause it is spiked with indigo – the natural colour of original blue jeans. Some natural wine varieties – such ‘blauer Portugiese’ or ‘Blauer Zweigelt'(see pic below to compare colours) – are very dark wines cause of naturally occuring blue pigments in wine. But, this new wine variety is a marketing trick. The Spanish brank ‘GIK‘ thought to themselves: “hm, if everybody is selling red wine – we will sell blue wine”. And, their concept works – they are celebrating economic successes in Spain. Quite obviously, it is absolutely tres chic, to drink blue wine if everybody else drinks red wine 😉 Now they are up to conquering other European markets. Interesting! Their wine by the way is product of food technology and not of raising a special new grap variety… they take out the grapes red pigments and add blue pigments – indigo and anthocyan – exctracted from the graps skins. Honestly, I want to try it!!

Poiera Dusty – an opportunity to spend an afternoon with friends

Recently, I described the liquor wine Maydie – quite an experience and a beautiful wine to be drunk alongside a dark chocolate desert. The chocolate artist Warren Laine-Naida now brought to my attention another wine – Poiera Dusty (see picture)- that excellently goes along with dark chocolate. If you think you see a mob on the wine’s label – you are right there is a mob on the wine’s label… Mobs and vaccuum cleaners are the distinction mark on all Poiera wine labels. The reason for this is simple: when the current wine-grower and owner – Jorge Moreira – bought Poiera, the slope was so dry that it reminded him of a dust desert. Since his first wine in 2001, this vineyard in the Dourotales region of Portugal has been critically acclaimed for their original and spirited wines. The wines are grown on a slope with northerly aspect by the way, i.e.tastes of Poiera wine tend to be more elegant compared to sun  bathed plants. And, this characteristic is preserved throughout the whole wine-making process: …

500 years of German Beer Purity Law!

Tomorrow – the 23rd of April – is the official day of the German Beer! Why? Cause that is the day the German Purity Law was proclaimed, i.e. back the on the 23rd of April 1516. It says that German beer can only be brewed from hops, barley and water. Later yeast was added to this mix as well (back then they were not yet able to produce yeast). The German beer brewer association prouds itself that this is the oldest, still maintained food purity law in the world (is that correct? Comment, if not!). And tomorrow, it will have been in place for 500 years – yeah! So, how is this date getting celebrated? Obviously, in Germany a lot. Every single beer brewery opens their doors to offer insight tours that day, hands out beers for free, offers ballon rides, etc. In Munich, for example, they are building a fountain of beer from which people can take drinks for free. Auswandererbier (emigrants’ beer) – perfection in taste and function!

The eccentric, edgy blog of Michael Risse brought this little pearl among the beers to our attention. True story – the beer called ’emigrant’s beer’ – was created in 1849 by a father for his son who needed to escape Germany to America due to political reasons. The loving and very skilled father created a beer that was uniquely suited for the long transport to America.  Intense hopping and a high alcohol content makes the beer very robust and long-time storeable. Mr Risse – an acknowledged gourmet and realist – describes the taste as “incredibly intense, especially accentuated, and impressive” beer. The brewery Faust (Brauerei Faust in Miltenberg) has remained in family ownership ever since and you can buy this for €  9,95 per bottle. Currently it is run by Johannes Faust by the way. So – nice little bit of history here 😉

Last call – get those bottles of champagne now!

What are you doing the morning of the 31st? Well, in case you are hosting a new years eve party – this is your last chance of getting some bottles of sparkling wine. Cause – guess what! – this year, just like the years before, new champagne cocktail fashions have appeared on the scene that are just too tempting to be ignored. After all, its always best to prepare several different types of those, cause experience taught me it is the safest way to keep the guests entertained and get them drunk quickly enough so that they don‘t ask for entertainment anymore. No, don‘t get me wrong, champagne cocktails are really an art and in no way a cheap road to eternal headache the next day. This year‘s trendsetter for champagne cocktail recipes is ‚goodie mother‘ with a rosemary mix: But it is always worth going back in time, i.e. to the year 2008, to seek additional inspiration from e.g. ‚Noble Pig‘ – all in orange: In 2014, 2013, and 2012, our lives were enriched …

Disgusting Shots

I believe in trying something new (and not illegal), even if you may not like the consequences. In this case it was alcohol tasting… I had the ‘pleasure’ of trying gin for the first time more recently. My sibling used to be a bar tender and provided the apt, though crass, renaming of gin & tonic to be piss & tonic. That experience was a first & last for myself. I tip my hat off to those who can consume that, as well as cheap vodka because both have a strong rubbing alcohol odor when served neat. This experience ranks up there with Jägermeister. These guys have provided a top ten list of vile concoctions that people are brave or stupid enough to consume. Some of the names are just a turn off (Tapeworm anyone?). Good luck to those who continue to the full list here. Which alcohol do you like the least?

Whiskey’s Skeleton

For the chemists, biochemists & science lovers out there, there is a blog called ‘Compound Interest‘, created by a chemistry teacher in the UK named Andy Brunning. His focus is ‘creating graphics looking at the chemistry and chemical reactions we come across on a day-to-day basis.’ He posted an awesome infographic on whiskey that has been going viral. I highly recommend seeing his other entries.

Great Balls of Fire(ball)!

Fireball is a whiskey liqueur with a heavy cinnamon flavor & kick that makes it a fun party drink from Canada. I got introduced to the product at a whiskey tasting event (if you couldn’t tell, I like whiskey). You may have heard of this drink from internet rumors/reports about the safety of the product which have been greatly exaggerated. None-the-less, I leave it up the the reader to decide if they want to walk on the dark side. 😀 I am usually not a fan of cocktails and too sweet alcohol, but I found that I enjoyed it (though I still prefer regular whiskey). The way the barman served it at the time was to add a stick of cinnamon into the glass with the Fireball. It really heightened the cinnamon flavor and it makes it look cool. 😀 I personally recommend that with the drink instead of it just straight. Of course, their site offers other interesting cocktail ideas for those who are into that. I hopefully provided with some of you some …

Blow that cork off!

I feel like such an alcoholic with all these alcohol related posts recently. Leckerfoodie will be back at the beginning of next month to provide some recipes again beyond my liquid diet posts. And to those who haven’t noticed, yes there is more than one author on this blog. 😉 These guys present err… their own creative approach with how to open a bottle of Cristal champagne with a firearm. It would be interesting if they tried that for New Year’s… hopefully before consuming any alcohol prior to the shooting.

Tennesee Honey (Whiskey)

Continuing with my alcohol themed posts as of late, I will review a bit of booze that some will consider blasphemous and others very tasty. The magic bottle is Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey Whiskey, which is in practice a whiskey liqueur. Generally speaking, I like whiskey neat, maybe with a little ice. I’m a little less in love with the flavored stuff. When I initially tried and tested the alcohol, I wasn’t thrilled with the bottle… With time though, it actually got better and I kind of liked it in the end as the taste slightly changed. Generally speaking, this is a bit of mixed bag beverage. Most will either like it or hate it. The ladies tend to like it more than the gents, but to each their own. In any case, if you don’t like as much, you can always use it in mixed drinks for the holidays. Cheers.

Take a SWIG out of this flask!

Ok, not exactly food or drink, but a very lovely bit of kit to store your favorite beverage. For those whiskey lovers (or their loved ones), here is a great little stocking stuffer for the holidays. SWIG® hip flasks is a small company in the UK. The little bottles are work of art in itself and you can add more personality with the selection of pouches available. I personally love the Union Jack one, though the orange below is also fantastic.

On the spotlight: Canasinth

Swiss can sometimes be a little bit crazy. For example there is this Swiss distillation called “Absinthe Distribution” (http://www.absinthedistribution.ch/distribution) which takes pride in keeping alive traditional absinthe recipes from “Val-de-Travers”. All their alcohols are based on natural herbs. One of their newest creation is cannabis flavored absinthe. No worries, the absinthe only contains flavours and no THC or other cannabinoids at substantial levels. (In this context, I would like to stress that it is the dangerously dumb to mix alcohol with THC; the effects can be deadly and are not enjoyable). As I said, this alcohol by “Absinthe Distribution” is not live-threatening – it is just very wicked and catchy when it comes to content plants. They are out for creating a cult-drink. In this manner, they play the perfect hippie-card by claiming all of their ingredients are eco-friendly grown. As if we never heard this story before… Given the bluntness of their advertising tricks, I am sure they are gonna be succesfull 😀

And another national holiday: today is national wine day in Moldova

Many of you may know about Romanian wine, but yes, of course, Moldova is pretty awesome when it comes to wine, too. Unfortunately, their wine industry is more under pressure by poor domestic spending capacity and low level of export (in fact Russia recently banned Moldovan wine imports cause Moldova dared to sign a treaty with the EU). But, Moldovans love their wine and support it with this very important festival (the stamp is dedicated to the festival in fact). If you want to read more about the topic, start here, here or here!

For all beer lovers – an almost perfect beauty (you can buy bottles and cans in the colour of beer)

Beatifull news arriving my ears from the lovely webpage adweek. A Spanish designer, txaber had the magnificient idea of giving beer bottles and cans the shades of the beer they contain. Beautifull!!! Still, don’t forget: beer in cans is a sin for authentic beer lovers (or just an emergency solution). Bottled beer is so much better.
